Phil Wong

The very first time that Phil Wong ever fired an actual firearm was in US Army Basic Training at Ft. Knox, KY in the summer of 1988.  By paying attention to, and following, the instructions of his primary marksmanship instructor, Phil managed to qualify Expert with the Beretta M9 pistol he was assigned, which sparked the beginning of a lifelong interest in firearms.

In 1993, Phil became an NRA-certified Basic Pistol and Personal Protection (Inside the Home) instructor, and in 1994 he became one of the first "Firearms Safety Training Instructors" in AZ to provide training for the state's new Concealed Weapons Permit program.  While continuing to regularly instruct AZ CCW classes, in 1997 Phil began competing in the first regular International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches to be held in his hometown of Tucson, AZ.

Due in part to his experience with handguns and instructing in deadly-force law, in 2005 Phil began a 15-year career in corporate armed security, culminating in his promotion to Site Security Supervisor for a cash-vault facility serving all of Southern Arizona.

Very soon after teaching his first CCW classes, Phil came to the realization that one of his students might be injured, killed, or criminally convicted if he, as their instructor, failed to pass on the most complete, accurate and truthful information available regarding the use of lethal defensive force.  With that responsibility in mind, Phil sought out training from the most-reputable instructors he could find, including the late James Yeager, Paul Gomez
and Todd Green, Craig "SouthNarc" Douglas, Scott Jedlinski, Gabe White, Tom Givens (Rangemaster, Inc.) and Massad Ayoob (Massad Ayoob Group).  Eventually, Phil would go on to complete all four levels of training offered by the Massad Ayoob Group, as well as the MAG Staff Instructor and Deadly Force Instructor classes.  Phil has also completed training as a Law of Self Defense Instructor with Andrew Branca.

Currently, Phil works for the Pima County Shooting Sports Program as a rangemaster and instructor.  He also holds NRA Basic Pistol, Basic Rifle and Range Safety Officer certifications, Glock Armorer certification, and instructor certifications in Lindell Method Handgun Retention/Disarming and Kubotan/Persuader use through the Massad Ayoob Group.
